What can you generate?

Every result from this character appearance generator is a complete character, not just a label. Here’s what each one includes:

  • Hair, eyes, and a memorable physical feature
  • Build, skin, and a distinguishing mark
  • A clothing style and a signature accessory
  • Posture, which tells you how the character carries themselves
  • A color palette and a drawing prompt you can use right away

What each appearance field is for

A good character design is a handful of deliberate choices, not an exhaustive list. These are the choices the generator makes for you, and why each one matters.

Build
Overall body shape and height. This is the first thing a reader or viewer registers and the main component of a silhouette, so decide it before small details.
Skin
Tone and texture, including freckles, sun marks, or scars. Beyond realism, it also sets the palette your other colours have to sit against.
Distinguishing mark
One memorable detail — a broken nose, a notched ear, a streak of white hair. It is the feature a character is recognised by, and it is usually the most useful place to hide backstory.
Clothing
What they wear says what they can afford, where they have been, and what they want other people to think. Clothing is the cheapest way to show class, trade, and mood without a line of exposition.
Signature accessory
A repeatable object that appears in every drawing and every scene. It acts as a visual shorthand, and an accessory with a reason to exist gives you a free story hook.
Posture
How they stand and move. Posture communicates personality faster than any facial feature, which is why it pairs well with the personality generator.
Color palette
Two or three colours the character is built from. Limiting the palette keeps a design consistent across scenes, panels, and different artists.

Describing appearance without clichés

Appearance is easy to overwrite. These habits keep a description useful for a reader and an artist at the same time.

Lead with the silhouette
Build and posture first, then one or two details. A reader forms a picture from the outline long before they notice eye colour.
Show it through action
A scar matters more when someone touches it, a coat matters more when it is wet. Attach each detail to a moment instead of listing it.
Avoid the mirror scene
A character looking in a mirror to describe themselves is a long-standing cliché. Let other characters notice instead, in a way that reveals their own attitude.
Match looks to history
Weathered hands for a farmer, mismatched boots for someone who left in a hurry. Details that imply a past read as design rather than decoration.
