Random Job Generator

Give any character a believable day job with this free random job generator. Each result picks an occupation from realistic, fantasy, and sci-fi careers, then adds where they work, a typical day, the problem that follows them to work, a side hustle, and the ambition they never followed. Use it as a random career generator for a novel, an occupation generator for an OC, or a quick job for an NPC.

Generate is instant. Generate with AI writes a fuller character and takes about 10–30 seconds.

What can you generate?

Every result from this job generator is a complete character, not just a label. Here’s what each one includes:

  • An occupation drawn from realistic, fantasy, and sci-fi jobs
  • A workplace and how far into the career the character is
  • A typical working day, plus the one skill they are unusually good at
  • A workplace problem, a side hustle, and an unfulfilled ambition
  • A personality, motivation, secret, and backstory that fit the job

The fields in every job result

A job title tells you what a character does; these fields tell you what it is like to do it. If you only use two, use the problem and the ambition.

Occupation
What the character does for a living. It is the anchor for everything else on the card, and a specific job (a hospice nurse, not a nurse) gives you detail for free.
Workplace
Where the job happens. A place gives you a setting, a cast of coworkers, and sensory detail, so it is often the quickest way into a scene.
Career stage
How far into the work they are. A first-week newcomer and a burned-out veteran can hold the same title and behave nothing alike.
Typical day
What an ordinary day looks like. Routine is the baseline a story breaks, so knowing it makes the disruption easier to write.
Key skill
The one thing they are unusually good at because of the job. It is a ready-made way for the character to be useful, or to get into trouble.
Workplace problem
A pressure that follows them to work: a rival, a debt, a rule they no longer believe in. This is the field that turns a job into a source of conflict.
Side hustle
What they do outside the job. It shows what the main job does not give them, and it is a natural place to hide a secret.
Unfulfilled ambition
The life they wanted instead. It adds a quiet motive and makes the character feel like they have a past beyond the card.

Job, career, occupation, and role: what is the difference?

People use these words loosely, but they point at different parts of a character. Knowing which one you need tells you what to generate.

Job
The specific work someone does today, such as line cook or court stenographer. This is what the generator rolls first.
Career
The path across many jobs and years. The career stage field gives you a point on that path without needing the whole history.
Occupation
The broader category of work, and the word most character sheets use. In this tool it is the same thing as the job.
Role
The part a character plays in a story, such as mentor or rival. A job can be the surface of a role, but the two are independent. See the NPC generator for the role-first version.

Random Job Generator FAQ

A random job generator picks an occupation for a character so you do not have to invent one from scratch. This one goes further than a job title: it also gives the workplace, career stage, a typical day, a key skill, a work problem, a side hustle, and an unfulfilled ambition, so the job reads like part of a person.
