Anime character archetypes explained

The generator draws from these archetypes. Each one is a starting shape, not a cage — the most memorable OCs take an archetype and break one of its rules on purpose.

Tsundere

Harsh, combative or dismissive on the surface, genuinely affectionate underneath. The arc is the thaw. Subvert it by making the prickliness a rehearsed defence the character knows is failing.

Kuudere

Cool, composed and near-expressionless, with real warmth underneath that leaks out in small gestures rather than words. Not cold — just quiet in a different register than a dandere.

Yandere

Devoted to the point of danger; affection curdles into possession. Works best when the tenderness stays sincere, so the menace grows out of love rather than replacing it.

Dandere

Shy and near-silent with strangers, talkative and funny once safe. The story is usually about who earns access to the second version.

Deredere

Openly warm and affectionate from the first scene, with no defensive layer. Give them something they are avoiding and the cheer stops reading as flat.

Himedere

Expects to be treated as royalty and behaves accordingly. Sharpest when the entitlement is compensating for having no real power.

Genki

High-energy, loud, relentlessly upbeat, usually the engine that drags the cast into the plot. Pair with exhaustion or a secret to keep them from becoming set dressing.

Senpai / Kouhai

The senior/junior pairing that structures school and workplace stories — admiration, mentorship, rivalry and obligation all run along this axis.

Ojou-sama

Wealthy, refined and sheltered, fluent in etiquette and helpless at ordinary tasks. The comedy and the pathos both come from the gap.

Chuunibyou

Convinced they carry a secret power or cursed destiny, and fully committed to the bit. Funny on the surface, and usually armour over something real.

Anime colour shorthand for OC design

Anime design treats hair and eye colour as instant characterisation rather than realism. These are the conventional associations — useful whether you want to lean into them or set up a deliberate mismatch.

Black / dark brown

The grounded default. Signals ordinariness, discipline or the audience-surrogate role. Makes an unusual eye colour read much louder.

White / silver

Otherworldly, ancient or emotionally distant. Common on non-human characters, prodigies and anyone carrying a heavy past.

Blue

Calm, intelligent, controlled. Standard for the composed strategist and the kuudere register.

Red

Hot-headed, passionate, aggressive. The reliable visual opposite of a blue-coded rival, which is why rival pairs so often use both.

Blonde / gold

Status, confidence or foreignness — the ojou-sama, the star, the outsider. Frequently paired with an air of superiority.

Pink

Sweetness, innocence and energy; the genki and deredere default. Effective as ironic camouflage on a yandere.

Green

Nature, healing, level-headedness. Often the mediator, the support character or the one tied to plants and spirits.

Purple

Mystery, magic and ambiguity. The go-to for characters whose loyalties are meant to stay unreadable.

Heterochromia

Two different eye colours — visual shorthand for a split nature, mixed heritage or sealed power. Strong signal, so use it once per cast.

Factions, schools and guilds to place an OC in

A character becomes a story the moment they owe something to a group. These are the affiliation types the generator draws from.

Magic academy

Ranked students, entrance exams and a faculty with its own politics. Instantly supplies rivals, mentors and a reason for the cast to share a building.

Adventurer guild

Ranked contracts, a job board and a reputation to protect. Gives an episodic structure and a natural difficulty curve.

Student council

Institutional power inside a school setting — budgets, discipline and elections. Turns ordinary school life into a political arena.

Martial arts dojo

Lineage, forms and a master with unfinished business. Built-in hierarchy and a clear metric for growth.

Idol agency

Manufactured personas, brutal schedules and public image as a resource. Good for stories about the distance between the self and the performance.

Mercenary crew

Chosen family bound by contracts rather than loyalty, until loyalty becomes the question. Portable, so the setting can move.

Spirit-hunting order

A secret organisation with rites, ranks and a cost to membership. Supplies both the monsters and the bureaucracy that fights them.
